Pedometers – They count your steps, some track the distance, speed at which you walk or run, and calories you burn. Used along with a fitness tracking spreadsheet or other journal, a pedometer can keep you motivated to keep moving.
You wear a pedometer along your waistline, usually along your dominant leg. Pedometers are built to clip there, with some also including a safety strap so that you don’t lose them. In general, pedometers have a pendulum inside that moves along with your hip, recording a step by swinging past a magnetic field each time you move. Electronic pedometers count a step when your foot hits the ground.
The Omron HJ-112 Pocket Pedometer is a modern, high-tech pedometer that can be carried in your pocket or bag. You can just drop your pedometer in your purse or you can attach it to your belt like a traditional pedometer. Using unique dual sensor technology hj-112 is one of the most popular pedometers at the time. It’s the perfect choice to track progress – easily, accurately and over time. Measures steps, aerobic steps, time, distance and calculates calories burned.

Frequent Questions about this product:
Does it matter where the pedometer is placed or attached?
Pedometer must be positioned correctly. Attach the unit to your belt or to the top of your waistband. The unit must be horizontal to the ground in order for the unit to function correctly. Both HJ-112 and HJ-720ITC can also be placed in your pocket or purse.
What’s the accuracy rate of Omron pedometers?
The precision of the step counting is within +/- 5%.
What are moderate steps?
At least 30 minutes of moderate exercise is recommended each day. Pedometer separately displays the steps and minutes walked at a moderate pace.
What are aerobic steps?
Pocket Pedometer separately displays aerobic steps and minutes that start counting after 10 minutes of continuous walking with more than 60 steps a minute.
How many steps should a person aim to do?
Whilst it is recommended that adults take 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week, children should aim for one hour each day, most days of the week. This would roughly be equivalent to 6,000 steps as well as their normal baseline step count. Children should be encouraged to do a range of activities other than just walking.
Does it matter what model I use?
Not all pedometers on the market are of the same quality – some pedometers will be more accurate than others as the internal mechanisms will be different.
What’s this thing about “dominant leg”?
Many people have a ‘dominant leg’ – this is the leg that is stronger and tends to take longer steps. Having the pedometer at the side of the dominant leg may cause the pedometer to record too few steps. Try wearing the pedometer on the other leg and see if there is a difference. Have fun!
What’s the difference between a pedometer and a stepometer?
In everyday language the little gadgets have a number of different names – pedometer, stepometer, step counter – all do the same thing. In professional language though, step counters measure only the number of steps you take while pedometers offer other functions like measuring the calories burned, distance walked etc. If the specific product has the features you need, then you should have no worries about whether it’s called step counter or pedometer.

I first saw this product being used by dieters on the Discovery Health Channel show: You on a Diet. I got one because I knew I needed to start walking and I wasn’t having much luck really keeping track of the distances I was traveling. If you are a person who likes to track information, or need something to monitor your progress so that you actually get out there and start taking those 10,000 steps a day –this is the pedometer for you. I am hooked. I can see my daily progress, compare it to previous days (up to 7 days back), check distance, number of steps, time walked or run, time of day, and kcal burned. Set up was easy (and I always have to read the instructions twice–but not this time), and it’s a snap to use. It’s also small enough that I can just clip it on to my waistband and it’s not noticeable under clothing. You can also put it in your pocket and have it work that way.
This is the only thing that has actually gotten me out there walking nearly every day. My husband got so curious about it he wanted to borrow it for a day. I finally got him his own, and he’s now as engaged by it as I am, and does his daily walks. As far as I’m concerned, whatever gets you out there works. If this is all it takes to get us motivated to be healthy, then it’s a cheap price to pay.

I wear the Omron on its loop from my belt and insert it into a watch pocket in my jeans. It fits there like the pockets were built for it and that is the perfect place for it when I am walking or jogging. The Omron tracks seven days and resets every night at midnight. It is carefree to use. Battery life seems to be about a year and the battery is easily avaliable for $2.50. So you need a screwdriver to replace it. Not that dangerous, a screwdriver is not a dangerous weapon and will not hurt a normal person – you can do it! The elegance in the design of the Omron HJ-112 Pedometer is illustrated in it’s simplicity of use. It just works for you, recording your effort as you move about in your day. If Microsoft would learn to make an operating system that did it’s job as well as the Omron Pedometer, life would truly be wonderful. I love it and recommend it highly.

I recommend this product for its durability and accuracy. I have dropped it on rock, hardwood floors, asphalt, and concrete with no loss of function. When one went through the wash, it still collected accurate data, but the display was compromised in that some of the LCD segments did not darken.
Omron could improve this product by putting a stronger spring in the clamp. I don’t use the belt holder. However, it does fit comfortably in a watch or change pocket. It’s a healthcare in a pocket!

I bought this item because of the review by Consumer Reports listing it as the best buy for the money. After my family members used the pedometers they all agree it’s very simple to use and accurate. Bought it at drugstore and we are well pleased.

I love the this pedometer. It’s great for someone who wants to use walking as their mode of exercise, and weight loss. Not only does it tell me the amount of steps I take but it also calculates the aerobic steps. I have learned what I need to walk in a day to maintain a weight I am comfortable with. I love walking and have worked to get my friends involved. I have purchased 5 of these pedometers to give as gifts. Each friend who has received one has loved it.

The pedometer is silent and small enough that it is easy to use. It can be clipped to you belt or even just left loose in a pocket. It works well either way. The pedometer is outstanding; customer service is without reproach; respond to questions and provide great service; there is only one complaint that we have fixed with a safety pin: the clip should be a bit bigger or stronger to hold the pedometer on clothing better. Other than that it is easy to use, and helps with our physical fitness regime.

After owning many different brands of pedometers, I have finally found one that accurately counts steps!! I highly recommend this product to anyone who is tired of searching. It is well worth the price. Save yourself the time and energy of searching for a great pedometer and just order this one. I might say that this is the first pedometer I’ve used that really works. I love the fact that it stores your information from the past week.
Final saying:
Omron hj112 premium digital pedometer is a nice and reliable gadget and you won’t regret if you get this one. If you want it delivered fast and if you want to save a few bucks use Amazon or Drugstore.

I look forward to reading what you’re planning on next, because your blog is a nice read, you’re writing with passion.
This pedometer looks like an awesome idea. I bought one of Omron’s blood pressure cuffs 6 or 7 years ago and it’s still going strong. Based on my experience their stuff is well made and I would recommend it to anyone. The biggest help I think it offers is the feedback of am I moving enough or not? thanks
Good blog. I got a lot of good info. I’ve been watching this technology for awhile. It’s fascinating how it keeps changing, yet some of the core factors remain the same. Have you seen much change since Google made their most recent acquisition in the arena?
i found many information from this blog and i am interested to buy omron pedometer I think this would be the best for morning walk or aerobic steps or daily exercise and this will help to gaining our capacity. is there any precautions to using it. How much guarantee of full money back if any damage or any technical problem? how we can find it? is it available in the open market? please provide information if available in india or from any site.
The Omron HJ-112 pedometer is a great little product it is available in the UK but usually goes by the name Omron Walking Style Pro Pedometer
I have bought many pedometers over the years and the best advice I could give is to buy the best that you can afford. The really cheap pedometers are a false economy. They do not last very long, are inaccurate and will need replacing more often
The great thing about these pedometers is they create some accountability when you get lazy with exercise. It makes it easy to set daily goals, such as losing X amount of calories or walking X amount of miles. Well worth the investment if you ask me.
Walking is a great form of exercise and anything which encourages people to walk more is therefore a good thing.
I don’t have a problem in putting my hiking shoes on and getting out on the hills so I wouldn’t really want a pedometer, but I can see that they would be a useful motivational tool for many people.
I have used pedometers on a regular basis in the past. I didn’t know there was such a thing as the “dominant leg”. I’ll try to switch the side I wear my pedometer and see if the step count changes.
Hi really enjoyed reading your article and was wondering Which pedometer to buy?
This is one of the best little pedometers out there. I always take it on vacation. A really good article.
I was excited to receive my Omron pedometer HJ-112 in the mail. I really like the features and versatility. I tried clipping it on my waist, on my side pocket, in my purse but no matter where I put it, the pedometer kept re-setting itself. Obviously it is very touchy, I had no idea that it re-set until I looked at it. Sometimes I admit I do bump into things that causes the reset button to get pushed. It is very annoying when I don’t realize it and look to find that there are zero steps after I just walked quite a distance. Any suggestions? It is too frustrating and I would much rather return the pedometer.
The great thing about these pedometers is they create some accountability when you get lazy with exercise. It makes it easy to set daily goals, such as losing X amount of calories or walking X amount of miles.
